Bastion Ste. Anne or Bastion Ste. Agathe, a National Historic Monument, has been transformed into an idyllic retreat by internationally acclaimed architect Jack Diamond, working within the rigorous restrictions of les architectes des bâtiments de France. Throughout the house, ancient stone walls are juxtaposed with clean, contemporary design.

In the 13th Century, a stone wall is built around Beaune to control the flow of grapes coming in to — and prized Beaune wine going out of — the city. In 1477, after the last Duke of Burgundy is defeated, Beaune refortifies its walls against threat of invasion by King Louis XI. In 1637, a key addition to the city's fortifications is built in the Thirty Years' War, and the idyllic Bastion Ste. Anne is born. In the early 1700’s, against the northern wall, an arms cache and office for the guard is constructed – the gem–like house that still stands today.

In late 1700’s, the city ramparts are transformed into wine cellars – but not the walls of Bastion Ste. Anne, which were made from solid stone to better support cannons. In 1890, the house becomes home to the gardener who tends the grounds, and an adjacent greenhouse is erected.
In early 20th Century, the gardens flourish, the orchard grows, and livestock roam within the walls as the city and the world outside evolve.

In 2008, the Bastion Ste. Anne is transformed into a private hideaway, as the building is restored and reinvented by famed architect Jack Diamond.

Within these walls, there is an entire world to explore.

The Orchard. Stroll the garden and pick your own plums, cherries, kiwis, and figs. Because much of the garden was planted a century ago many rare floral varieties still flourish here.

The Échauguette. At the corner of the property, the guard's parapet still stands with its domed stone roof. Want to play hide and seek?

Dining al Fresco. On the gravel terrace in front of the house, set the rustic table, light some candles, and share a bottle of wine under the stars.

The Greenhouse Fireplace. On a chilly night, curl up in the greenhouse-cum-living room with a good book. Then let the dark close in upon the glass walls as the fire blazes.

The Bulthaup Kitchen. Contemporary, elegant, and perfectly functional. A true cook’s kitchen.

The Views from the Loft. Out one window, a view of the spacious garden and its fruit trees; out the other, the picturesque roofs of the town spreading into the distance.

The Numbered Stones in the Master Bedroom. Lie in bed and delight in the ancient numbers painted thickly on the stones around you – they were the guard’s way of recording inventory of ammunitions centuries ago.

The house has one three–piece master bath with bathtub/shower and one two–piece powder room.

The Hospices. This 500–year–old charitable hospital is one of the most pristine examples of 15th century French architecture. What a roof!

The Rampart Walls. Stroll the perimeter of the old town for an elevated view of history.

Festivals:

July
International Baroque Music Festival. Baroque operas, played on old musical instruments, performed in the Hospices and the 12th century Basilica of Notre Dame. Unforgettable.

November
Beaune Wine Auction. For hundreds of years, the finest wines of the region have been auctioned off for charity in the courtyard of the Hospices. The auctioneer lights a candle – bidding is open until the flame goes out.

Occupancy:
Bastion Ste. Anne features a master bedroom with a queen-sized bed and a loft with a single bed. It is ideal for a couple, or a couple with one child. (Upon request, a floor cot for a second child is available.)

Length of Stays:
Six and four-night stays. Other stays are possible on a case–by–case basis, provided a minimum billing of 2,000 euros.

Rates:
Rates range from 3,500 euros per six-night stay (2,500 euros per four-night stay) in the high season (April 1 to November 30) to 2,800 euros (2,000 euros per four-night stay) in the low season (December 1 to March 31).
